St Mary’s Music Intent
At St. Mary’s we provide our children with a rich and varied experience of Music. We aim to give our children a life-long love of music and hope to inspire the next generation of musicians.
Our children will be exposed to a wide range of musical styles and genres. They will develop an appreciation for world music and popular music, as well as studying the great composers and their contribution to the way music has developed over time. Children will build on skills in composing, performing, listening and the history of music.
Every child will have a have a rich and diverse musical education, allowing them to experience high quality music making; we provide our children with opportunities to listen to and work with music professionals from a variety of genres. Children’s musical skills and talents are valued and celebrated.
We believe that every child is entitled to learn an instrument, read music notation and perform regularly. All children will have regular opportunities to sing and develop vocal technique. PP, SEND and DL have equal opportunities to develop their musical skills. Children at St Mary’s will also be given opportunities to learn an instrument with specialist teachers, play in ensembles and music events within both the school community and the wider community.
Children will leave St Mary’s with an appreciation for the joy of music, a love for singing and a range of musical skills and experiences. They will be confident performers, composers and listeners and value listening to music for pleasure to enable them to enjoy and appreciate music throughout their lives.
St Mary’s are delighted to have been selected by Wiltshire Music Connect to become a Music Mark School for our participation and contribution to our local music cluster. Music Mark is the UK Association for Music Education, championing and supporting access to music for all children and working in partnership with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). We are thrilled to have been recognised for the value we place on music and are excited to be part of a network of Music Mark schools across the UK. Becoming a Music Mark school will lead to further opportunities for our children and access to training for our teachers to ensure that our pupils are able to access a high-quality music education. We are proud to be able to use the Music Mark logo.
We are also delighted that in July 2024 were recognised a ‘Sing Wiltshire’ School and we are excited to be able to expand our vocal offering through new resources for 2024-2025.
Our classes have regular music lessons in which children learn the basics of musical terms ( for example: pulse, rhythm, timbre) and start to learn musical notation. The children experience a wide range of musical styles and genres through listening, singing and accompanying with tuned and un-tuned percussion in our dedicated music room. There are also opportunities for children to work collaboratively to create their own musical compositions. We are fortunate to be well-resources with a range of musical instruments, and we follow the Kapow scheme for class music lessons.
There are opportunities for the children to learn stringed, keyboard and percussion instruments with two visiting peripatetic teachers. Our teachers are happy to be contacted directly, so please see the information below:
