Maths at St Mary’s
Maths Curriculum Intent
Through our mastery approach, our aim is for all of our pupils to be confident mathematicians who enjoy maths and see its relevance in the wider world. We develop resilient pupils who are not afraid to make mistakes. We encourage all pupils to be to be independent thinkers, capable of articulating their understanding.
This approach reflects the three main aims of the National Curriculum (2014):
- to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
- to be able to reason mathematically
- to solve problems by applying mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems.
Mathematics teaching for mastery assumes everyone can learn and enjoy mathematics. Mathematical learning behaviours are developed so that pupils focus and engage fully as learners, who reason and seek to make connections. Teachers continually develop their specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, working collaboratively to refine and improve their teaching.
Maths Curriculum Implementation
We support the teaching and learning of maths through the White Rose scheme, used in a daily dedicated maths lesson. The White Rose pedagogy covers all areas of the National Curriculum with a mastery approach to teaching key mathematical skills. Children are encouraged to use and apply their mathematical knowledge and to develop cross curricular links, home links and links with maths and the wider world.
