British Values
At St Mary’s, we are guided by the Gospel and our school values, which reflect our strong commitment to promoting British values: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
Each term, we focus on one of our core school values during Monday Worship and actively incorporate British values into our themes, lessons, and wider school life.
Democracy is taught through opportunities for pupil voice, such as the School Council and class votes, where children learn how their opinions can shape decisions. They experience democratic processes in action, understanding the importance of fairness, representation, and shared responsibility.
The rule of law is reinforced through our clear behaviour expectations, school rules, and restorative approaches. Pupils learn the value of laws in keeping everyone safe and treating each other with respect. Visits from local police officers help deepen this understanding.
Individual liberty is promoted by encouraging children to make choices within a safe, supportive environment. Whether it's selecting activities, expressing opinions, or pursuing interests, pupils are taught about rights, responsibilities, and the importance of making informed, respectful decisions.
Mutual respect is at the heart of our school ethos and one of our values. Children are taught to value and celebrate differences, work cooperatively, and support one another. This is modelled by staff and embedded in daily interactions, collaborative learning, and our dedication to Catholic Social Teaching.
Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs is developed through RE lessons, assemblies, themed weeks, and educational visits. We celebrate cultural diversity and encourage open, respectful dialogue about different worldviews, helping pupils grow into understanding and compassionate members of society.
Through these approaches, British values are embraced and experienced throughout our school community, helping our children grow into thoughtful, respectful, and responsible citizens.
